A LONG STORY
Since the Stone Age, the Nile has been bringing life and wealth into Egypt, quenching the surrounding desert terrain and depositing rich sediments that fertilise crop lands. Curiously, the Nile flows upwards, from South to North. In actual fact, the river is just flowing downhill as water generally does. The ancient Egyptians, however, used to think all other waterways flowed in the wrong direction! The longest river in the world, the Nile flows from the Great Lakes in East Africa all the way up into the Mediterranean Sea. It courses through 9 countries, with less than a quarter of the Nile actually lying within Egypt’s boundaries.

AFRICAN AROWANA
The main difference between this fish and the rest of the Arowana family is in its mouth. While regular Arowanas are carnivorous and practically eat anything -- from cockroaches to frogs and other fish, the African Arowana feeds on microscopic living organisms in the water or plankton. In short, it has a much smaller mouth. African Arowanas also have slightly rounder bodies and, unlike their Arowana cousins, they don’t have barbels – long hook-like sensors hanging below the lower lip area.
Fully grown, African Arowanas can reach the height of a preschooler and weigh in at over 10kg. The amazing fish has a special breathing ability that allows it to survive even in waters with extremely low oxygen supply. African Arowanas make their home in the Nile River basin and throughout the rest of the African continent.
AFRICAN TIGERFISH
The African Tiger fish has a long slender body with silver shimmering scales. In the wild, it is thought to be able to grow to the height of a professional basketball player at 2 meters long! One of its most recognisable features is its set of protruding razor-sharp teeth that it uses to slash its prey with relative ease. Swimming in schools, these fearsome predators are known to take down large land animals grazing along the river banks.
